About Margaret Sims

Who Am I?

  Then 2002            Now 2008

As a little girl I wanted to be a Maths Teacher as Maths was my favourite subject. When my father was killed in a road accident, I had to change my goal and do secretarial subjects at high school. A year later, my mum found some financial support and I won a Teacher’s Scholarship to be a Commercial Teacher. I tried to change the scholarship to Maths but was told by my high school principal to be grateful that I’d won a scholarship.

Over the years I realised that Shorthand, Typing, Business Principles and Computing have enough Maths in them to keep me happy. It was a slight detour but still very close to my original goal.

You can have a job title and practise it in many different areas. And that’s what I did. After marriage came opportunities to teach interstate, overseas and in many areas where Business Education is taught. I liked it because each new place and area offered challenges to test myself and become better at what I did.

In the mid 90s, like many people, I buried my head in the sand, listened to others who said my job was safe and ignored the changes I could see happening around me. In late 99 it collapsed on me and I had to choose between redundancy and being reduced to part-time teaching. I walked away as I knew that I’d had enough and I longed to do something different. At 53 I had no idea what I wanted to be.

After being told many times that I did not have experience in jobs I wanted to have a go at, I started a business doing what I knew – teaching computing skills to individuals and businesses. Then I trained as an Image Consultant because it appealed to me. I knew the trainer from my own personal experience of getting colour and image advice from her. I called my business ‘Standing Tall Image Consultancy’.

As I practised new business skills, I saw that lots of people were changing direction and doing interesting things. How, I wondered, could I help people searching for new job and business ideas? After much research and help from others,'YourFutureDirection' was born. I was encouraged to think outside the square and take an ‘opportunity approach’ to job choices. It felt perfect for me as my variations on being a Business Teacher were based on opportunities that came my way. Giving people computer tests and putting them in pre-determined little boxes was not my way. So I devised a pro-active system to show people how to tap into and create opportunities for themselves.

When I looked for job opportunities, I found them. The world today is full of amazing options for expressing your talents and that’s what I happily teach people – how to find the perfect job or business that appeals to you now.
