What is a TeleSeminar
A TeleSeminar is an internet Teleconference. There are basically 2 types -
1. Inactive where you can only listen to the speaker or someone interviewing a guest presenter although sometimes they allow for questions at the end.
2. Interactive where the listener can comment and ask questions throughout the session.
Free TeleSeminars usually last between 60 - 75 minutes though some go for 90 minutes.
Listening to the TeleSeminar
1. Either Phone-in only to a Bridge Line for the Conference call.
2. Or Click on the internet link to click and listen direct from the web (sometimes called a Webinar).
3. Or A combination of phone or web listening and you choose which you prefer.
Call Cost
- It's free to listen direct from the Web, not including your download limit.
- If you dial a Bridge Line it is usually to the USA and costs you. The best way is to purchase a Phone Card.
Phone Cards
1. Purchase one from a Newsagent. I haven't used that type and cannot comment on it.
2. Buy one over the Internet. I use www.telephonecards.com.au and find them most reliable.
Click on 'Call Everywhere’ on the list on the left. I buy a $10 card which lasts 120 days after first use. There's no actual card, only a password for identification when you use it. You dial a local number, choose your language, enter your password and then dial the Bridge Line. It costs about $A2-3.00 for a 60 minute call.
Registering for the TeleSeminar
Registering is usually done from a link on an email.
For a Free TeleSeminar - Once you have submitted your details, you are sent an email with the Date, Time, Bridge Line phone number and the PassCode for that TeleSeminar. Some do not require registration and have all the details in the original email.
For a Paid TeleSeminar - Once you have submitted your details and paid for the TeleSeminar, you are sent an email with the Date, Time, Bridge Line phone number and the PassCode for that TeleSeminar.
How do I calculate the Time of the Call in Australia
If the person is based in Australia, like me you will be given the Australian Eastern Standard Time first. And seasoned presenters, add the USA Pacific Time as well.
If the time of the call is given in USA time, the simplest method is to add 14 hours to the Pacific Time (ie West Coast USA) to get Eastern Standard Time, Australia. Oh! Do make allowances for Daylight Saving in Australia and Summer Time in the USA.
Otherwise go to http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/converter.html. In the section ‘Select time & place to convert from’, enter the day, time and location (For Pacific Time, scroll down to USA, California – Los Angeles). Then enter your location details in the ‘Select place to convert to’. Click ‘convert time’ and it does the calculation for you. Or the reverse if you are converting from Australian to USA time.
Seasoned presenters send a TeleSeminar reminder email close to the time in case you have forgotten or accidentally deleted it.
Joining the TeleSeminar
- It's a good idea to ring in early especially if more people have registered than there are lines available. This gives you the opportunity to introduce yourself to other people. Don't be shy.
- Check that the Bridge Line phone number has a '1' for USA, a 3 digit area code and 7 digits for the local phone number. Otherwise you will have to add the country code '1' for USA to the beginning of the phone number.
Tips for Comfortable Listening
1. If your landline phone has a 'SpeakerPhone' button, use it. 75 minutes with the phone to your ear can be tiring.
2. If you have a mobile phone stand to rest it in, that's a good idea. Don't rest it in its phone base or you will find yourself disconnected.
3. Be ready to take notes. Some presenters make an audio copy available the next day so you can re-listen or save it. And some don't make a copy available. Good presenters will tell you if a recording of the call will be available.
4. Have water/tea/coffee nearby if you need it.
5. Some presenters tell you that they are going to mute the line so distracting noises are not heard. If they do not, * + 6 is usually what you can use to mute yourself. Muting saves embarrassment.
